MINAMI

The changing qualities of natural light, the angle of illumination, and the position of the viewer—MINAMI’s works respond to their environment, revealing a different radiance with every encounter. Each piece is completed only when placed within a space, where it enters into dialogue with light, atmosphere, and perception.

A recurring element throughout MINAMI’s practice is the square canvas and the circular form placed at its center. The circle, a universal symbol of wholeness, harmony, and eternity, serves as a quiet and stable structure. Within that still framework, thousands of crystal glass elements are assembled into a concentrated field of light, producing a subtle sense of movement and fluctuation.

Before entering the world of crystal-based art, MINAMI worked as a comedian represented by Yoshimoto Kogyo.
His earlier practice of bringing joy to people through performance has since evolved into a visual language that moves emotion through material, light, and presence.

This unconventional background continues to inform his work, shaping a practice grounded in performative sensitivity, refined aesthetic awareness, and singular imagination. Today, his works are recognized across a wide range of fields, including entertainment, design, and the broader creative industries.

MINAMI’s solo exhibition Luminous Light will be presented at the Contemporary Art Gallery on the 8th floor of Hankyu Umeda Main Store.

This exhibition marks MINAMI’s first solo presentation at the gallery.

Art brought to life by light.

Defined by the shifting qualities of natural light, the angle of illumination, and the viewer’s position, MINAMI’s works continuously transform in response to their surroundings. What emerges is a form of quiet luxury—an elegance that is neither ostentatious nor decorative, but deeply rooted in the essential beauty of the material itself.

His works hold a serene radiance and leave behind a refined emotional resonance. They are not merely seen; they are experienced through atmosphere, sensation, and time.

Crafted in Crystal

Each work is created using carefully selected Swarovski crystals.
Their exceptional clarity and precision-cut facets catch and reflect light with remarkable brilliance.
Every individual crystal carries a jewel-like presence, while the material’s resistance to fading ensures a lasting and enduring beauty.

The Art of Precision

Using tweezers, MINAMI places each crystal by hand, calculating its angle and chromatic relationship within the overall composition. The process demands extraordinary concentration and an immense investment of time.

His distinctive technique brings together the fluidity of paint drips, the organic movement of mineral-like veins, and the luminous presence of crystal. The result is a body of work that remains fundamentally two-dimensional, yet evokes a striking sense of depth, texture, and dimensionality.

Beyond Ornament

At first glance, MINAMI’s works may appear dazzling or opulent.
Yet the more closely one looks, the more their intricate structure reveals itself—built through repetition, precision, and a subtle command of perception.

These works do not exist simply to sparkle. Rather, they invite viewers to experience how light shapes space and how that space, in turn, is felt through the senses.

The circle suggests wholeness and harmony. Within that quiet order, light continues to shift and transform. MINAMI’s art brings to the viewer a sense of still tension and quiet exhilaration.

Though precisely composed, each work remains fluid in perception, continually changing according to light, distance, and the movement of the viewer.
